Indian protests continue over fatal gang rape

Protesters from various opposition political parties across India clashed with police on Friday, as anger over the alleged gang rape and subsequent death of a low caste young woman continued to grow.

Two politicians from India’s opposition party briefly scuffled with police when they attempted to meet the family members of the victim just outside of her village in Uttar Pradesh.

One of those caught up in the protests was member of parliament Kakoli Ghosh.

“When we tried to go in, this lady police officer pulled my blouse and beat one of our legislators, Pratibha Mandal, with baton. She fell down."

Demonstrators, mainly aligned with opposition parties, took to the streets elsewhere - carrying photographs of Mahatma Gandhi.

They say that the present government is 'murdering' the values personified by the freedom fighter.

The 19-year-old victim was from the Dalit community, who often face violence and discrimination in India.

She died from her injuries on Tuesday after allegedly being attacked on September 14th near her home.

Her family believe she died after a brutal sexual assault.

Unrest between protesters and security forces broke out in recent days after police cremated the woman's body.

The victim's brother told Reuters the cremation was against the wishes of her family, who had wanted to perform funeral rites - something local officials deny.

Her family have also accused four high caste Hindu men, who have been arrested but not yet charged.
